{"id":8209,"date":"2014-05-20T15:27:48","date_gmt":"2014-05-20T19:27:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.masterorganicchemistry.com\/?p=8209"},"modified":"2024-12-04T10:56:19","modified_gmt":"2024-12-04T16:56:19","slug":"how-to-draw-a-cyclohexane-chair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.masterorganicchemistry.com\/2014\/05\/20\/how-to-draw-a-cyclohexane-chair\/","title":{"rendered":"How To Draw The Cyclohexane Chair Conformation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>How To Easily Draw Your First Cyclohexane Chair Using the &#8220;Parallelogram Technique&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now that we&#8217;ve had an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterorganicchemistry.com\/2014\/05\/14\/an-aerial-tour-of-the-cyclohexane-chair\/\">aerial tour of the cyclohexane chair<\/a>, we&#8217;re going to move on to a very important skill:\u00a0how to properly draw one of these beasties.<\/p>\n<p>There are several techniques for properly drawing a cyclohexane chair.<\/p>\n<p>Here is one method that breaks it down into drawing a series of 3 sets of parallel lines.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-38614\" src=\"https:\/\/www.masterorganicchemistry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/0-summary-how-to-draw-a-cyclohexane-chair-with-all-substituents.gif\" alt=\"summary how to draw a cyclohexane chair with all substituents\" width=\"640\" height=\"684\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another method is starting by drawing a parallelogram.<\/p>\n<p>In the video below, I walk through what I consider to be the most completely idiot-proof way to draw a serviceable chair, by first drawing a <strong>parallelogram<\/strong> (something you should already know how to do). Using this as the &#8220;base&#8221; of our chair, we then draw flaps moving up and down (representing the head and footrest), then put in the axial and equatorial groups.<\/p>\n<p>Importantly, we can use this method to draw a chair in either the &#8220;left hand&#8221; or the &#8220;right hand&#8221; version of a cyclohexane chair, which becomes important, once we learn about chair flips (that&#8217;s next!)<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/z6vgDTv-2OM\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In time and with a little bit of practice, you won&#8217;t need to draw the parallelogram to guide you. Think of it as a set of training wheels that you will later discard once you don&#8217;t need them anymore.<\/p>\n<h2>How NOT To Draw The Cyclohexane Chair Conformation: 4 Examples<\/h2>\n<p>Having an easy-to-remember technique is crucial.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise, your first few attempts in drawing a cyclohexane chair from memory might see you end up with one of these &#8220;variations&#8221; from a rogue&#8217;s gallery of 4 ways\u00a0to screw up drawing a cyclohexane chair (<strong>and don&#8217;t feel bad &#8211; we&#8217;ve all done it . Bond angles in this carbon\u00a0is not properly tetrahedral &#8211; furthermore, the adjacent carbons are eclipsed, not staggered!<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to fix:\u00a0<\/strong>Flip the groups on the carbon.\u00a0The &#8220;axial down&#8221; group should be drawn as &#8220;axial up&#8221; and the &#8220;equatorial up&#8221; group should be drawn as &#8220;equatorial down&#8221;.
